ESC General Cardiology Continuing Professional Development Programme

Professional Profile

Professionalism is a requirement for all healthcare professionals.  Whilst we as cardiologists recognise professional and unprofessional behaviour, defining professionalism is difficult.

The Royal College of Physicians of London (UK) have defined it as a:

“Set of values, behaviours and relationships that underpin the trust the public has in doctors”

This definition can be used as a benchmark against which we can develop, maintain and demonstrate our own professionalism.

In addition to your qualifications and clinical experience, it is also important to address other aspects of your continued professional development including:
  1. Publications
  2. Teaching
  3. Professional Experience
  4. Research
  5. Meetings
  6. Additional information

Many opportunities exist to publish your work. These may include:

• Poster and oral presentations at conferences
• Letters
• Case studies
• Case series
• Scientific papers (original scientific research)
• Educational articles
• Book reviews
• Book chapters

It may also be possible to become involved in clinical trials, which may lead to publications and experience of the process. To become involved in clinical trials, you will need to undertake a “Good Clinical Practice (GCP)” Course.
